Snowberry Clearwing Moth & Coralberry Linocut Print — Hemaris diffinis & Symphoricarpos orbiculatus
This black and white linocut print features a dynamic depiction of the Snowberry Clearwing Moth in flight, framed beautifully within arching branches of coralberry—one of its key host plants. Centered and poised mid-hover, the moth’s soft, hummingbird-like form contrasts with the structured clusters of berries and leaves, creating a piece that blends natural history with clean, vintage-inspired design. It’s well suited for minimalist interiors, naturalist collections, or anyone drawn to botanical and entomological illustration.
The Snowberry Clearwing is a member of the sphinx moth family and is often mistaken for a hummingbird due to its rapid wingbeats and hovering flight. Its partially transparent wings and bold banding give it a distinctive silhouette, especially striking in monochrome. Native to much of North America, it frequents gardens, fields, and forest edges, where its larvae feed on several woody plants—including coralberry. Coralberry itself is a graceful shrub with arching stems, tiny pinkish flowers, and clusters of dusky berries that persist into winter, providing shelter and food for wildlife. The relationship between the moth and its host plant is captured here as a unified composition, where motion and structure meet in a quiet, harmonious balance.
The central image measures approximately 5x6 inches printed on 6x8 Japanese Hosho paper. Each piece is hand-carved and hand-printed, ensuring that every print carries subtle variations in ink and texture. These slight differences make each artwork truly one-of-a-kind—perfect for framing, gifting to nature lovers, or adding a touch of vintage-inspired naturalism to your home.
