Halberd-Leaved Violet Linocut Print — Viola hastata

This black and white linocut print is a clean, radiant depiction of Viola hastata, the halberd-leaved violet—its distinctive arrow-shaped leaves and delicate bloom haloed by the sun and its gentle rays. The simple contrast of ink and paper gives the piece an elegant, timeless feel, perfect for minimalist interiors, botanical decor, or soft woodland- and cottagecore-inspired aesthetics.

The halberd-leaved violet is a spring wildflower found in the rich forests of eastern North America. Its leaves, shaped like tiny heraldic halberds, emerge in mottled greens that catch the early light filtering through the trees. The plant’s pale yellow flower often appears illuminated in the understory—a quiet, golden glow amid shadow and leaf litter. That sense of natural radiance inspired the sun-haloed design, celebrating the fleeting moment when the violet seems to shine with its own gentle brilliance.

The Halberd-Leaved Violet print measures approximately 4x7 inches and is printed on 6x9 Japanese Hosho paper.
The design was hand-carved from a linoleum block and printed by hand, making each piece unique and perfectly imperfect. No two prints will be exactly alike. Relief printing embraces subtle variation, resulting in charming, one-of-a-kind artwork crafted through a mindful, hands-on process.
