This linocut print features a bold and intricate depiction of the Giant Leopard Moth alongside one of its primary host plants, Pokeweed. The Giant Leopard Moth is known for its striking pattern—white wings adorned with velvety black spots that reveal flashes of iridescent blue and orange beneath. Despite its dramatic appearance, it’s a gentle presence in eastern and southern North America. Its larvae, the familiar woolly bear-like caterpillars, feed on a variety of plants, but Pokeweed is a favorite. Pokeweed itself is a tall, statuesque perennial with vibrant magenta stems and dark, glossy berries. Though toxic to humans, it plays an important role in the ecosystem, supporting birds and insects—including the Giant Leopard Moth, which relies on it for food during its larval stage.
This relationship between moth and plant is captured in a single, cohesive design, where the structured lines of the art deco border complement the organic forms at the center.
